About me

I hail from a place called Thottam in the erstwhile South Canara district (now Udupi district) of Karnataka. I was born in Parkala, a small village near Manipal but brought up and educated in Bangalore. I have been married for 30 years now, my husband now a retired bank officer. I have two sons – elder one is a dentist and younger one is an engineer. Both of them have been instrumental in setting up this blog, helping me with images, recipe selection and editing.

If you like cooking and reading blogs, you will be aware that there are several wonderful food blogs out there, maintained by professionals as well as by interested but very talented amateurs. Over time I will compile a set of links to them. In spite of such a large number of food bloggers, Indian food is so vast and varied that you will still find variations of recipes that suit your taste and preferences. If I find an interesting variation of my recipe on another blog, I will also link to them.

Overall my intention behind blogging is to maintain a valuable record, to keep myself occupied and to share my experiences (including mistakes !) over the years with people.

    Dear Mrs Rao,

I stumbled on your blog/site and was very pleased with the way the recipes are displayed including pictures. I hope you will add more recipes and also let us know when and at what interval new recipes are added so that I can open the site on that day/month. Please also add easy to make veg/non-veg recipes. Thanks and keep up the good work.

      Hello John,

I guess, this is an example of ‘better late than never’ – hope this finds you well.

You can subscribe to the blog by email or by RSS feed – which will keep you appraised of the latest recipes as and when I upload them.

I am a vegetarian by habit, and hence only post vegetarian recipes. But there are other talented food bloggers online and I’m sure you’ll find some sumptuous delicious non-vegetarian Indian recipes there.

Wishing your family and you a Happy Diwali.

    Dear Pratibha,
Growing up we knew a Konkani lady who was our family friend and I still feel her cooking is the best I have ever known. I always subconsciously emulate her style and patience everytime I am in the kitchen. I try to look for konkani recipes online but I have never found anything that resembles her style and methods. Until I came upon this page. I am very eager to try all of them out. Atleast the ones which allow me to find the ingredients on east coast USA.
I was also hoping to start a blog of my own with the recipes that I keep getting creative with..but after having seen such a great job done by you I feel discouraged!!

    Mrs. Pratibha,
Well to your name you do have a ‘pratibha’ for cooking/blogging. I have come across a variety of blogs on cuisines, but what makes yours different are the pictures at every stage. As it is always said ‘A picture is worth 1000 words’, this leaves absolutely no confusions if you are a beginner.
As I was casually skimming through different cuisines, the oats rotti caught my eye and it eased my my usual worry of ‘what tomorrow for daughter’s lunchbox’. I am all set to make it tommorrow morning 🙂

    Hi Chaitanya,

Our apologies to you for the poorly structured website. We’re trying to improve the website, and we’re aware that searching for recipes is the most pressing need. In the meanwhile, do let us know what you’re searching for, and we’ll post it for you in this space.

    https://cuisineindia.wordpress.com/2011/07/27/alsi-seeds-flax-seeds-dry-chutney-powder/

What you can do is –
    1. Go to the Recipe Index.
    2. Press the keys Ctrl+F or Ctrl+f
    3. Type a keyword in the small box that will pop up top-left or bottom-right and Enter.
    4. The word search will highlight related words.

This is how I found the recipe you were looking for. Hope you enjoy it more than the search for the recipe !

Especially these days my cravings have been making me to cook what I had back home. Surpisingly your site showed up with this recipe of aavale saru that I’m made today. Dear Mrs. Rao,
I am an American male scientist who has spent parts of several years in Bangalore and developed a love for South Indian food and cooking. Based in College Station, Texas, a university town, fortunately I have at least one good store with Indian supplies and I have a great Indian graduate student in my lab who has helped me a lot.
Recently I have been getting into making idly. My student gave me an idly steamer for the stovetop and I have successfully made idly using a pre-prepared mix. Now I would like to make my own idly batter. One thing I am not sure about is how one is supposed to grind the grains needed. Do you do this by hand with a mortar and pestle or is there an electric grinder that you can recommend? A picture would be great!

Thanks in advance for your advice. I love your blog. One of the great beauties of Indian life is COLOR of the cooking and food.

    Hello Mr. Young,
You can use electric grinder- mixer. Soak three cups of rice and one cup of urad daal (BLACK GRAM SPLIT WITHOUT SKIN) overnight . Wash and grind using little water as required for the consistency of idly. Let it ferment for 12-14 hours well covered. After that your batter is ready to go into the idly-steamer.

Thanks for your response. As far as I know, grinders that work on wet samples are not common in the US. All I have is a food processor, plus I have a coffee grinder that I dedicated to grinding spices.
I have seen pictures of wet grinders on websites here…but they are all >$300!

I have a mortar and pestle so I guess I could do it by hand.

      Hello Mr Young….

If you are still wondering about making your own idli batter….. I do it all the time using my blender (Oster)….. you might have to run the blender for a couple of minutes more than you would if you use an Indian grinder to get a good batter…..

This is a really different post.

I have been cooking few years back. I am not a good cook.
Past 3 years I had a cooking help, as I was working.
Now as I have come to US, I have to manage everything and soon I have to start working.

I need some tips from you as how do you plan the cooking.. Also it would be great if you can share some easy but different kind of recipes which are quick but attractive.

I always get confused when I invite even a single family of 4. I make mistakes and always in hurry to finish cooking before the guests come.
I want to be social and want to invite people and want to make them happy with my hospitality.

    Please guide me..

Thanks a million for your blog. Accidently came across looking for spicy Chutneys. I am from Mysore and love the spicy chutneys. None of the restaurants I have visited in San Francisco Bay area – they do not serve hot and spicy chutneys, for me. So I make myself and always look for newer recipes. You have a wonderful collection in here and love them all. If you have Karyapak Chutney – would love try some. My family (mom and aunts) used to make this one. Mostly same spices with lots of Karyapak, Red chillies and Tamarind. I am vegan by choice and try all sorts of Karnataka veggie food.

    Hi pratibha,

I am also going to create a FOOD blog as I have intrest in cooking,

But I have a big doubt that when I will open my blog, I should post all the receipes for the first time(I means before launching my site i should post all the receipe collection at a time and launch a whole created site) or with one post we can launch a blog…

Does it really helpful to open a blog with one receipe post…

    pls reply me

Hi Shwetali, I created my blog with 7 recipes. One can always start a blog with a single recipe for sure and keep on adding more further. I welcome you to the blogging world.

      Hi Rekha,
Iwas born in a Parkala a close by place to Hiriadka. But since i was brought up at Bangalore and now at times we both come over to the U S to stay with my younger son and family. I was encouraged by my younger son to put up recipes so that any body interested could follow them Thanks a lot for your feed back. In fact my recipe blog has to be edited again as the recipes of 2007 do not contain photos in steps . So will surely do it later in a couple of months.
